Women who 'knicker-bombed' Kenny: We had lots of support
The women who "knicker-bombed" Enda Kenny at a Fine Gael fundraising dinner in London said they had lots of support for their action.
Two women, who had each paid £100 to attend the gala dinner in Kilburn, London, approached the Taoiseach's table on Friday night at the Crown Moran Hotel.
They spoke loudly in unison, saying: "Welcome to England, Enda, where 12 women a day come to access safe and legal abortion, often in secrecy and alone.
"Repeal the 8th. Repeal the 8th."
(This was a reference to the 8th amendment to the constitution, which states: "The State acknowledges the right to life of the unborn and, with due regard to the equal right to life of the mother, guarantees in its laws to respect, and, as far as practicable, by its laws to defend and vindicate that right.")
One of the women then placed a pair of white knickers on Mr Kenny's plate, emblazoned with the words: ‘Enda, Repeal the 8th’.
The women were quickly escorted from the room, as were those videoing their actions.
The women are pro-choice activists with the group Speaking of IMELDA (Ireland making England the Legal Destination for Abortion). IMELDA describes itself as a direct action feminist performance group.
In a facebook post after the event, the women said: "Most were very supportive as we talked to people going in."
The Taoiseach made no reply when the women confronted him.
