Woman to sentenced for 'squalid' sexual exploitation of four-year-old daughter

A judge has described as "squalid" a Dublin mother's sexual exploitation of her four-year-old daughter in a mobile phone video recording.

The 28-year-old, who cannot be named to protect the child’s identity, will be sentenced at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on Monday on two charges including sexually assaulting the girl on March 12, 2010.

The court heard the accused was very drunk when she recorded a mobile phone video of her four-year-old daughter with the girl's father, who was lying on a bed naked from the waist down.

The video was not screened openly in court but the sound of adult voices and at one point the child's laughter was audible as Judge Martin Nolan watched the recording on a laptop.

The video came to light accidentally when a member of the public found a smashed mobile phone and handed it in to gardaí over concerns about its content.

The young girl was immediately taken into care.

The court heard the accused has taken steps to tackle alcohol addiction and visibly gagged when she was shown the footage again.

The judge said he accepted the unemployed mother of one now knows what she did was dreadfully wrong but he described it as a squalid crime.

Sentence will be passed on Monday.
