Gardaí are seeking witnesses to a serious road accident in Birr, Co. Offaly.

Shortly after 5pm yesterday, a female pedestrian in her 70s was knocked down as she crossed the main Birr to Tullamore Road close to Loughnane's Topaz Garage on the N52.

The woman was struck by a rigid lorry and was attended at the scene by passersby.

The injured woman was taken to Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore and subsequently transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin where she remains in a critical condition.

Gardaí at Birr are investigating the collision and appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision or who was in the area at the time to contact them at Birr Garda Station on 057-9169700 or at any Garda Station.
