Woman rescued after entering water amid stormy conditions in Limerick last night

A man and woman have been hailed "heroes" after helping to rescue a woman on the River Shannon during terrible weather conditions in Limerick city last night.

The woman, in her 30s, entered the river off a boardwalk on Steamboat Quay, situated next to the Clarion Hotel, as storm winds picked up, around 11.30pm.

A man and woman who were passing by at the time threw the woman a life buoy, which she held onto until rescue services arrived and brought her to safety.

Specially trained river rescue swift water technicians attached to Limerick City & County Fire Service entered the water and secured the woman before they removed her to dry land via their rapid response rescue boat Fireswift.

"The woman was very lucky those two people came upon her in the water," said a source.

"They can be very proud of themselves for helping her with the life ring, and she did well herself in holding onto the ring."

"They really are two heroes."

The woman was transferred from Steamboat Quay by ambulance to University of Limerick.

A source said the woman was been treated for signs of hyperthermia and had escaped serious physical injury.
