A woman is in critical condition in hospital following an apparent stabbing attack in Limerick.

A 28-year-old man has been arrested.

Gardaí were called to a home at Hassetts Villa's in the Thomondgate area of Limerick around 12.40am this morning, following reports of a disturbance.

There they found a 37-year-old woman suffering from suspected stab wounds.

The woman was taken to University Hospital Limerick, where her condition is described as critical but stable.

A 28-year-old man was arrested at the scene.

He is being detained at Henry St Garda station under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The scene has been preserved for a technical examination.
