A woman in her mid-50s has died while picking periwinkles on Bere Island near Castletownbere in West Cork.

A woman in her mid-50s has died while picking periwinkles on Bere Island near Castletownbere in West Cork.

The woman, who is from the island, failed to return from picking periwinkles at the western end of the island this morning.

A local search was organised, and her body was recovered on a strand this evening by the Castletown lifeboat.

James Lynch from Valentia Coastguard said that it appears to have been a tragic accident.
