A woman aged in her 70s has died in a house fire in Shannon, Co Clare last night.

A woman aged in her 70s has died in a house fire in Shannon, Co Clare last night.

The alarm was raised at around 1.30am this morning, when the blaze at a house in the Hurler's Cross area was spotted by a motorist on the nearby N18 dual carriageway.

Gardaí, ambulance personnel and two units of the fire service from Shannon attended the scene, and the woman's body was discovered inside the property.

A post mortem examination is due to be carried out later today.

Gardaí are treating the incident as a tragic accident.
