Woman airlifted off Carrauntwohil with neck and back injuries
A woman has been airlifted to hospital in Cork after suffering head and back injuries in a fall on Ireland's highest mountain this afternoon.
The woman in her 50s fell on the higher reaches of O'Shea's gully around 3pm as she and her climbing party were making their way down Carrauntwohil in Co Kerry.
A doctor in the group rendered medical assistance. The alarm was raised and Kerry Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT) responded.
The Waterford-based Irish Coast Guard helicopter was also tasked.
Mountain rescue team members made their way up the mountain and used ropes to lower the woman in a stretcher to an area of the Hag's Glen where the helicopter could operate safely.
The woman was winched off the mountain just before 6pm and was flown to Cork University Hospital.
It was the second call out for KMRT this weekend.
They stretchered a man in his 20s out of Tower Wood, on the road between Killarney and Moll's Gap, at around 10pm last night.
It is believed the man was among a group camping in the area who fell and suffered an ankle injury.
He was taken by ambulance to hospital in Tralee.
