White to appear before committee on free children's healthcare

The Minister for Primary Health Care will appear before the Oireachtas Health Committee today.

Alex White will face questions on free GP care for children under-sixes as contained in the Health Bill 2014.

The IMO have criticised the plan, saying it is wrong to give every child a medical card regardless of needs and family income.

Chair of the Health Committee and Fine Gael TD, Jerry Buttimer, says provisions have already been made to spend money in this area.

"The Government have committed to expending extra money to this particular piece of legislation," he said.

"They have engaged with the IMO, on behalf of GPs, and today at our meeting it's an opportunity for the Minister to outline a road map."
