West to be worst affected as more heavy rain on the way

Severe weather conditions are expected in all parts of the country over the next 24 hours with high winds and heavy rainfall, but mountainous areas of the south and west will be worst-affected.

There is also a risk of flooding in many places and motorists are reminded to drive with care in the poor conditions.

Joan Blackburn of Met Éireann said the West will bear the brunt of the rainfall.

"What we are talking about is 1 to 2 inches of rain in the east of the country and 3 inches of rain in some western parts - in the mountainous parts up to 4 inches," she said.

"Normally at this time of the year the monthly rainfall would be about 2 inches or 50mm, maybe a bit higher in mountainous areas."
