Web Summit founder's pro-Trinity comments 'just a bit of madness', says Bird

Broadcaster Charlie Bird has said students should not pay any attention to comments from the founder of The Summit yesterday, where he said he preferred Trinity graduates when hiring.

Yesterday, Higher Education Authority board member and Dublin Web Summit (now 'The Summit') founder Paddy Cosgrove said that a 2.1 from Trinity is "pretty much" worth a first-class honours degree from the other six universities.

Cosgrove is himself a TCD graduate.

A spokesman for the HEA stated Mr Cosgrave’s views were his own and not those of the authority.

Broadcaster Charlie Bird failed his Leaving Cert and never went to University. He said Cosgrove's comments were not helpful.

"Don't get het up over something like this," he advised. "This is just a bit of madness.

"You do everything to your ability. If you can get (a first) from Trinity, go for it. If you can get a 2.1 in Trinity, go for it…The same in UCD, or UCC or wherever it is."
