Dozens of his friends have described John as a hugely popular figure with a natural ability to make people laugh. He attended the joint 30th birthday party of his friends Seán Kelly and Mark Sheehy on Friday night.
Seán said: "John has that rare ability to have the whole room in stitches as he tells a story or a joke and is just great company to be around.
"Everyone is mad about him and we want him to know that. Even if we were to find out that he was safe, that would be enough for now. He comes from a great family and they need the help of the public to unlock the mystery. There is no anger or recrimination, we just want our loved one safe."
