Journalist John Waters has accused the Government of "having an agenda" when it comes to the Marriage Equality referendum.
He also said those on the No side are being "scared into silence".
The journalist is one of the members of the new First Families First group, launched in the last week, to campaign for a No vote.
Mr Waters said the Government had a different agenda to the gay community when it comes to same-sex marriage.
"Their agenda continues on from the Children's Rights Referendum of 2012. They want to suck away the rights of families," he said.
"What we're going to end up is marriage equality of a particular kind. It's a little like the economic equality which is offered by certain socialist parties in government, where they want to bring everyone down to the same level of poverty.
"That's what this (referendum) will do, in marital terms."
Waters also said a "climate of intimidation and menace" around the issue had been "so acute that people have been scared into silence".
"I think that's counter-productive from the point of democracy and from the point of view of the Yes campaign," he added.
"It has meant the flaws that we're highlighting (in First Families First) are only appearing at a late stage."
