Waterford plane crash investigation 'to take at least a month'

The Air Accident investigation into the death of pilot Howard Cox, who died in a crash in Waterford this weekend, is expected to take at least one month.

The English pilot, who was a married father of one, lost his life in the crash in Waterford on Saturday evening.

The wreckage of his BD5 Micro Jet will be removed for further examination today.

Close friend and former RAF pilot Gerry Humphries was in the air near Howard at the time of his crash.

He said Mr Cox, 67, was a highly respected member of the flying community.

"He was known within the flying community all over the world," he said. "His Bede BD-5 aircraft was unique and extraordinarily beautiful - he started building it at university in the 1970s."

Mr Cox's aircraft was based at Waterford Aero Club’s hangar in Killowen, outside Waterford city, and he took part in last year’s inaugural Foynes Air Show in Co Limerick.

It is believed Mr Cox had become aware of a technical problem while flying on Saturday - reportedly a fire - minutes after he took off, and made a mayday call to air traffic control in Shannon.

He attempted to turn back to land at Waterford Airport but crashed in the Garranbane area.

Emergency services were quickly at the scene but the pilot was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
