Waterford fisherman dies after boat capsizes

A fisherman has died today after a fishing vessel capsized off the Waterford coast.

The trawler which was out of Dunmore East, started to go down at around 5.30am this morning.

One of the two men on board managed to swim ashore and raised the alarm at around 7.30am this morning.

A Coastguard helicopter was launched and the other fisherman was picked up at around 8.30am and taken to Waterford Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The fisherman who raised the alarm is understood to be suffering from shock.

Both men are thought to be from Dunmore East and aged in their 40s.

Today's tragedy comes exactly six years after another fishing trawler, the Pierre Charles, sank off Dunmore East with the loss of five lives.
