Water-supply waiver to be announced next week for those with unfit supply

A waiver on water supply charges for homes on boil water notice is to be announced next week by the Commission for Energy Regulation.

The move would see homes with the problem for less than three months get a 50% discount, while a 100% discount would apply for those suffering for over three months.

Environment Minister Alan Kelly said the regulator was considering further compensatory measures which, while not a cash payment, could see the time limits reduced even further.

Alan Kelly explained to the Dáil last night that water supply charges would not apply to those with water problems for three months.

"If confirmed when the water charges plan is published shortly, any customers on a boil-water or drinking-water notice three months prior to the commencement of water charges on October 1, 2014 will not pay for their water supply."

The first bills will be payable next January and will cover the period from October 1.
