One Kildare school, The Holy Family Secondary School in Newbridge has sent a note out to parents warning them of this development.
Caroline Malone is one of teachers at the school, and she has seen the negative outcomes of this new trend firsthand.
"Just this morning walked in class one of my students had her hand covering her mouth. She looked suspicious and a bit guilty so I asked her what was wrong," said Malone.
"She removed her hand and there were horrible marks all over her mouth and up to her nose area where scabs had actually formed. And so I asked her and she told me exactly what it was. So I was quite horrified and shocked," said Malone.
