A viable improvised explosive device was found in Co Wicklow last night.

The Army Bomb Squad was called to waste ground near a lane close to Ballywaltrim shortly after 10pm last night.

Some nearby residents were evacuated as a controlled explosion was carried out, before the scene was declared safe at around 3.40am this morning.

The remains of the device were handed over to gardaí to assist with their investigations.
