A residential area in Cootehill, Co Cavan was sealed off earlier after an explosive device was found.

Viable explosive device made safe in Cavan

A residential area in Cootehill, Co Cavan was sealed off earlier after an explosive device was found.

The army bomb disposal team was called to the scene just before midday when a member of the public came across the device.

A cordon and road closures were put in place and a number of nearby houses were evacuated.

The device was found to be viable and was rendered safe by a controlled explosion.

All evidence has now been handed over to Gardai.

The scene was declared safe at 2.40pm.
