Ireland's largest health insurer has announced plans to cut the fees it pays to hospital consultants.

The VHI says payments to consultants will be reduced across the board by 5% as part of a cost-cutting programme.

It claims the savings will be passed on to customers.

Meanwhile, the VHI is also urging customers to check their statements to ensure they have not been overcharged.

Around 2,500 bills are queried by customers every year and half of these are found to contain mistakes.
