Public Expenditure Minister Brendan Howlin has said that overhauling the Garda fleet will allow the force to both deter and intercept gangs targeting rural areas.
The announcement comes after it was reported that more than 200 high-powered and highly-visible vehicles will be bought to tackle the rural crime wave.
It is believed more than €5m has been approved by the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform for the purchase.
Minister Brendan Howlin said that the spend is necessary to tackle one of the biggest issues facing the country.
"The idea that you'd have very visible, high-profile cars manning our motorways, manning roads off the motorways; not only as a deterrent to anybody who might think they can get away with it - but also in a position to respond very quickly to any incident that happens," he said.
"So I understand that's what's envisaged and I think it's necessary."
