Varadkar: Majority will pay Household Charge when fines kick in

Transport Minister Leo Varadkar said today that he is confident that the majority of homeowners will pay the Household Charge when they are faced with fines.

Transport Minister Leo Varadkar said today that he is confident that the majority of homeowners will pay the Household Charge when they are faced with fines.

As of yesterday, only 328,000 thousand homes had registered for the tax out of 1.6 million.

Minister Varadkar said that he is confident that many will pay the €100 charge as the march 31 deadline approaches, or at least once the fines for late-payment are applied.

"Y'know, there are a few days to go yet, including Saturday, and I know some of the local authorities are going to be open on Saturday to receive payment," he said.

"I think that it's quite possible that 20 and 30 and 40 thousand a day could pay over the next number of days, and that will be a substantial proportion of people, maybe not a majority, but the majority will pay as the fines start to kick in over the next number of months.

"I'm fairly sure of that."
