Varadkar: Budget is about 'a bigger picture'
Transport Minister Leo Varadkar has urged the media to focus on "a bigger picture" as the Government prepares to introduce the Budget next week.
Addressing the Fine Gael national conference in Limerick, Minister Varadkar said that this Budget will be remembered as the one that allows Ireland to exit the Troika bailout.
He said it is his job in Government to ensure Fianna Fáil never gets the chance again to bring the country to its knees.
Jobs and the economy are centre stage at the event today, ahead of the leader's speech tonight.
Minister Varadkar said that the Budget on Tuesday will be a significant one.
"Inevitably, and it's understandable of course, the media focus will be on the detailed measures, and in particular, the least palatable decisions and those that are politically difficult," he said.
"But there is a bigger picture, and it's a bigger picture that history will record.
"It'll record this Budget coming next week as the one that allowed us to exit the bailout and restore our sovereignty.
"And it'll record it as the budget that allowed us to start reducing our debt."
