The Minister for Social Protection Leo Varadkar has said Michael D Higgins would have “broad cross-party support” if he wants a second term as President.
However, Varadkar has said it is too early to say whether another candidate might emerge to seek the role.
President Higgins previously said he would only serve one term, but has more recently refused to say whether he would seek another seven years.
Leo Varadkar has said he would have wide support if he seeks it.
“I think if he were to seek a second term he’d have enormous support,” said Varadkar.
“Whether he’d be unopposed or not would be a matter for others, but I think that if he were to seek a second term that he’d have very strong cross-party support.”
