Up to 300k homes 'to escape water meters' in initial roll-out

A spokesperson for the Department of the Environment has said around 300,000 homes will be unable to have a water meter installed during the inital roll-out of the scheme.
However, the department expects that figure will be much lower as the scheme continues and that the exact number will be a matter for Irish Water.
It comes following reports that a third of Irish homes will have to take to pay a flat charge, because a meter cannot be installed in their house or apartment for logistical reasons.
Children's Minister Frances Fitzgerald has also said the flat rate water charge for some homes is necessary, because the Government has to get the economy on track as soon as possible.
Minister Fitzgerald said the Government will try to make the system as fair as possible.
