Universities raise spectre of college fee hikes

A proposal to increase college fees is being mooted once again.

A proposal to increase college fees is being mooted once again.

Universities are launching a new campaign warning the Education Minister Ruairí Quinn that the Government will need to foot the bill or fees will be upped in 2016.

The charge for students has been increasing by €250 a year to a maximum of €3,000.

At the same time Exchequer funding has been falling.

Responding to the Minister Ruairí Quinn moved to allay fears, saying third level institutions have to look at what courses are duplicated, in order to save money.

"The last of the €250 increases will not come in until December 2015," he said. "Between now and then we need to get a clear picture of what's happening in all the educational instructions."
