The UNITE trade union has decided to ballot its workers in local authorities and the HSE on industrial action in opposition to the public-sector pension levy.

The union says its members are furious about the blatant unfairness of the levy, which will see between 3% and 10% taken from the salaries of all public and civil servants.

The Civil and Public Service Union is already planning a one-day strike next Thursday to protest against the measure.
