Unite members vote for public sector strike

Members of public sector union Unite have voted overwhelmingly in favour of next week's 'day of action' in protest at plans to imposet €1.3bn of cuts on the public service.
The union represents public sector workers in the local authorities, the HSE and the education sector. Between 80% and 95% of workers across the different sectors voted in favour of the industrial action.
IMPACT General Secretary Peter McLoone had earlier warned that the day of action planned for next Tuesday may not be sufficient, to hammer home the message to Government, ahead of December's budget.
Talks between both sides have effectively stalled as unions wait for a document from Government on its vision for the public service.
Mr McLoone said the document is crucial if talks are to continue.
"That's a document that we were promised by the Taoiseach during the course of last week" he said.
"When we have that, I think we can then engage more fruitfully on what it is that needs to be done to address the immediate problems that face us all in 2010."
