Unions consider major protest over country's debt

Trade Unions are considering holding a major protest march in February to voice their anger at a failure by the Government to agree a deal on Ireland's debt.

The Executive Council of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions is meeting in Dublin this morning and is expected to endorse a recommendation to hold a demonstration.

Trade unionists are angry at the lack of progress the Government has made since EU leaders recommended severing the link between bank debt and sovereign debt.

David Begg, President of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions says he would support a march.

"No matter how much we do in terms of taking adjustments, changes and sacrifices and no matter how competitive we can make our country, unless we can deal with our debt problem we won't survive.

"An agreement was made at the European Council in June to de-link banking and sovereign debt but within a couple of months a number of major countries had resigned from that agreement. Unless we deal with that problem, no matter how many sacrifices Irish people make it's not going to make a difference."
