Unions accuses Tara Mines company of 'opportunism' against Irish workers
SIPTU has today criticised management at Tara Mines in Navan, calling their treatment of staff "unacceptable".
A total of 670 workers at the zinc plant were put on protective notice yesterday.
Work is continuing as normal at the facility, but employees say they now fear for their jobs.
It comes a week before talks are due to take place at the Labour Relations Commission regarding cuts to worker's pay and conditions.
John O'Regan of SIPTU said that the parent company Bolidan is singling out Tara Mines.
"We are the only ones within the group of the multinational which they are targeting," he said.
"All their other companies, that are abroad, are not being treated in the same way.
"It's opportunism by the company, it's just taking the vulnerability of workers in Ireland a step too far."
Pre-tax profits at the firm that operates Tara Mines last year decreased by 10% to €28m, figures released in December show.
Current reserves indicate a mining life through 2019, according to the report.
The report said: “While the outlook for the mine’s future remains positive, current global economic and market conditions requires the group to remain focused on productivity improvements and control of its cost base.”
