Union spokesman can see Luas strike 'getting worse'

Up to 90,000 commuters in Dublin are facing further travel disruption tomorrow as Luas drivers strike.

Tomorrow will see the second 48-hour strike in recent days as drivers down tools in an ongoing row over pay.

Further industrial action is also planned for March 8 and St Patrick's Day.

Staff want wage hikes of up to 54% over two years - which Luas operator Transdev says it cannot afford.

Eoin Reidy from the SIPTU union said that drivers are standing firm.

“We’ve had our first ever dispute in the history of the Luas last week, and regrettably because there were no talks this week, we have a 48-hour stoppage starting tomorrow as well,” he said.

“So unfortunately unless the employer can come to the table with some meaningful engagement, unless Transport Infrastructure Ireland can come to the table with some fresh thinking as well, I can see this becoming protracted and ongoing and getting worse.”

Tánaiste Joan Burton said today that she believes a deal can be done to end the industrial action.

“I believe a solution is possible,” she said.

“I know the drivers feel they haven’t had a pay claim for quite a number of years. I believe if they sit down and talk with the company and together with their union officials and representatives, they should be able to strike an agreement.”
