Union chief wants new public-sector pay talks
The leader of the country's largest union is calling for fresh talks regarding public-sector pay before the Haddington Road Agreement expires next year.
SIPTU chief Jack O'Connor says due to the faster than expected recovery of the Irish economy, the agreement should be revisited.
According to the Sunday Independent, the deal with trade unions is expected to last until July 2016, and negotiations for a new agreement were originally planned for next year.
However, Mr O'Connor, believes the talks should begin much sooner.
"We're now expecting to record growth this year of something between 4½-5½%, depending on which commentator you're listening to," he said.
"That's considerably in advance of where everybody expected we would be.
"So if the recovery is running a year ahead, then we should be looking at rolling back the pay cuts across the economy."
