Ulster Bank continuing to work on payments backlog

Ulster Bank is continuing to work on a backlog of payments after a major computer glitch caused havoc in their system last week.

Customers have been warned it could be next week before their account details are up to date.

"We know this disruption to our customers is unacceptable and we're committed to doing all we can to help as many of our customers as possible," the bank said in a statement on its website.

"The staff in our branches and call centres are doing everything possible to help customers."

Ulster Bank said that the opening hours of around 50 branches would be extended every day this week, from 9.30am until 7pm.

"We have a dedicated help desk which is open 8am to 10pm to take your call on 1800 205 100. If you are calling from abroad please call +353 9156 2910," the statement continued.

"We confirm that no customer will be out of pocket and there should be no adverse impact to customers' credit ratings as a result of this incident."

Ulster Bank parent company Royal Bank of Scotland meanwhile said it had updated all but 1% of NatWest and RBS account balances - also affected by the glitch - on Monday night.

RBS Group has had less success sorting out the delays experienced by Ulster Bank customers, but said it hopes to restore a full service for the start of next week.

"The full focus of our efforts will now be on delivering the same result for our Ulster Bank customers who continue to experience unacceptable delays in their accounts being updated," RBS said.

Ulster Bank has estimated that about 100,000 of its customers have been caught up in the problems, which have meant that customers’ balances have not been updating properly and their wages have not shown up in their accounts, although the money is “in the system”.
