Twomey defends Reilly over primary care list addition

Fine Gael TD and GP Liam Twomey has defended the decision to add Swords and Balbriggan to the primary care centre list, saying they had been identified on the broader list of 200 sites.

The two locations are inside the Health Minister James Reilly’s constituency and according to documents received by the Irish Times, the Junior Health Minister with responsibility for Primary Care, Roisín Shortall said she found it 'hard to understand' why the list had been changed.

Minister Reilly's spokesman has expressed confidence that all of the locations chosen were in real need of a primary care centre.

However, Twomey can't explain why they were added to the final document.

“I have no idea. That’s one that Minister Reilly will have to answer himself.

“I’m sure there is no indication that there is a conflict of interest or any connection between the minister and the GPs involved.

“One thing that I think is very important is that both places are on the HSE list and there is a priority for both to be built at some stage.”
