Two transatlantic flights diverted to Dublin Airport today - including one that had already made an unscheduled landing in Canada.

British Airways flight 174 diverted to Dublin this morning as the crew would not have reached their destination without exceeding their permitted working hours.

The flight had left New York bound for London last night but was forced to divert to St John’s in Newfoundland with an ill passenger.

Following a delay of several hours, the Boeing 747-400 jet continued its journey in the early hours of this morning only to divert for a second time.

The airline has confirmed that the flight diverted to Dublin "so that cabin crew remained within their working hours period".

"We arranged for a new crew to fly to Dublin so that the flight could continue as soon as possible,” the spokesman added.

Meanwhile, soon afterwards, a US-bound flight diverted to Dublin with a passenger who had fallen ill.

Delta flight DL-161 was travelling from Amsterdam to Minneapolis and was north of Donegal when the crew turned around.

The A330-300 jet landed safely at around 12.20pm and was met by airport fire crews.

Ambulance paramedics were also waiting at the terminal and the passenger was later removed to hospital for treatment.
