Two men killed in Mallow apartment fire

Two men have died in a fire at an apartment block in Cork.

The alarm was raised shortly after midnight at the Granary Court building on St Joseph's Road in Mallow.

Gardaí who rushed to the scene rescued a man and a woman from inside and attempted to re-enter the building but were unable to because of the smoke and flames.

Two men - one aged 36 the other 37 - died in the fire. Another man and woman were taken to Cork University Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

It is understood that one of the dead men is from Dublin and the other man is from Mallow but it is unclear whether they were living or visiting the apartment where a party was taking place.

Units of Mallow Fire Brigade fought the blaze and brought the fire under control, while HSE emergency personnel and gardaí from Mallow also attended at the scene.

Gardaí are due to carry out a technical examination of the scene later today to establish the cause of the blaze.

The alarm was raised at 6.30 am when flames were seen on the roof. No one was injured.
