Two related men have been found dead on neighbouring farms in a suspected murder-suicide.

A man in his early 70s was found shot dead where a fire had broken out in a farmhouse at Ballycormack, Bagnalstown, Co Carlow, several hours before another man was found dead on adjoining land.

The first man’s body was found in a farmhouse at about 4am this morning by local firefighters.

Several hours later, the body of the second man, in his 60s, was in an outhouse building on the adjoining farm.

Gardaí said the second man was found dead at 9am. He is understood to have taken his own life. It is believed the man’s wife discovered his body.

A Garda spokesman said the scenes of both incidents have been sealed off and forensic examinations will take place.

A team from the State Pathologist’s office and the Garda Technical Bureau are expected to carry out examinations of the scenes and the farm buildings throughout the day.

The men are believed to have been related through marriage.
