Two men arrested over McConville murder

Detectives investigating the abduction and murder of Belfast mother of 10 Jean McConville have arrested two men.

A 63-year-old was detained in the Forkhill area of south Armagh and a 64-year-old was arrested in Co Antrim.

They are being questioned at the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Serious Crime Suite in Antrim town.

The arrests bring to 11 the number of people arrested and questioned as part of the investigation into the 1972 murder.

Mrs McConville was kidnapped by an IRA gang from her flat in the Divis area of west Belfast and shot dead and secretly buried.

Her body was recovered on a beach in Co Louth in August 2003.

The abduction, killing and secret burial of the 37-year-old was one of the most notorious crimes of the Northern Ireland Troubles.

The police case lay effectively dormant for decades until a flurry of activity this year, with a series of arrests, the most high-profile being the four-day detention of Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams.

Mr Adams, who denies involvement, was released pending a report being sent to prosecutors for assessment.

Mrs McConville was killed after being wrongly accused by the IRA of informing to the security forces.

She became one of the “Disappeared” victims of the Troubles until a heavy storm revealed her burial place on Shelling beach.
