Two in hospital after jet ski capsizes

Two people are recovering in hospital after they were rescued from the River Shannon in Co Clare this evening.

The man and woman, believed to be in their early 20's, had been jet skiing on the river at Fort Henry about a kilometre south of the bridge at Killaloe when they got into difficulty.

The alarm was raised at around 8.00pm when locals in a nearby house spotted that the pair were in the water after their jet ski had capsized.

The Killaloe unit of the Irish Coast Guard was alerted and raced to the scene by water and road.

Two ambulances and a rapid response advanced paramedic unit were also sent to the incident.

Gardaí from nearby Killaloe arrived at the scene and made their way down to the waters edge where the wind had carried the man and woman towards the shore.

Gardaí assisted the pair from the water.

The casualties, believed to be suffering mild hypothermia and exhaustion, were taken by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick for treatment.
