Update at 9.30pm: The Minister for Justice and Equality, Frances Fitzgerald, has said she is appalled by the loss of life in Omeath this evening: "The fact that a Garda has laid down his life while protecting the community is a cause of great sadness.

"His death will be mourned by the entire nation, grateful for the service which he gave to it.

"Today's tragic events are a stark reminder of the risks which members of An Garda Síochána face day in day out trying to keep our communities safe. I know our communities will stand with An Garda Síochána at this most difficult time for them.

"While no words at this time can be expected to console his wife and children, his family, his colleagues and all who loved him, they know that he gave his life in the best traditions of An Garda Síochána protecting the community he was so proud to serve."

The Police Service of Northern Ireland also said thoughts were with counterparts in the Irish Republic.

“PSNI will lend any assistance or support required,” the force added.

Update at 9.15pm: Speaking this evening Garda Commissioner Noirín O'Sullivan has expressed her shock following the shooting dead of the Garda in Co Louth: "I am deeply saddened to hear of the death of my colleague in a fatal shooting incident this evening while carrying out their duties.

"At this time my thoughts and prayers and those of the entire Garda service are with his family, friends and colleagues.

"This incident highlights the unique nature of the job carried out by the men and women of An Garda Siochana, and the dangers they face every day.

Update at 8.30pm: Two men, including a member of the Gardaí, have been fatally injured and one woman is seriously injured as a result of a shooting incident in Co Louth.

The Garda Representative Association (GRA) said it was "shocked and saddened by the awful news that a colleague in Omeath has been shot and killed this evening.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the member's family, friends and colleagues at this time."

GRA President Dermot O'Brien said, "This dreadful, dreadful news is the deepest fear of every police family.

This puts everything we do into perspective.

"At this time of distress, the garda family will be doing everything possible to support the late garda's relatives and loved ones, friends and colleagues."

Update at 8pm: Three people, including a Garda , have been shot dead in a domestic incident in Louth.

It's understood Gardaí were called to a house in Omeath just after 6pm this evening.

The scene has been sealed off and an investigation launched.

The office of the state pathologist has been notified.

The shooting happened only a few miles from where Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe was fatally shot on January 25 2013.

Local Journalist Ken Murray spoke to us just a few minutes ago: “The details are still unclear at this stage, but what I’m hearing is that an incident occurred in a house, in the village of Omeath.

“It seems that a shooting took place.

“I understand that the Gardaí were called and when they arrived at the door to investigate the incident, one of the Gardaí was shot.

“Another shooting occurred shortly afterwards.

“The details are scarce at the moment, but more will be known in the coming hours.”

Sinn Féin Leader and Louth TD Gerry Adams has expressed shock at the news of a fatal multiple shooting incident in Omeath, County Louth.

Gerry Adams said: "I am shocked at the news that three people including a member of An Garda Síochána have died in a shooting incident in Omeath this evening.

"My thoughts and sympathies are with the families of those who have died."

Update at 7.40pm: Three people are believed to have died and a Garda seriously injured in what is understood to be a domestic incident in Omeath Co. Louth.

Update at 7.20pm: There are reports that someone has died and a garda officer has been seriously injured in a shooting in Omeath Co Louth.
