Two day operation results in gardaí finding over 1,000 drivers with defective lights

Over 1,000 people were found to have defective lights when stopped as part of a two day garda operation targeting broken, missing or inappropriate use of lights.

More than one third of vehicles stopped were found to have no front lamp on the right hand side.

Over 300 fines have been issued as a result of 'Operation Light Up'.

Gardaí say members of the public were advised of the initiative in advance and had an incentive to rectify any defects.

So far this year, 39 people have lost their lives on the roads - 14 more than the same period last year.

Gardaí are appealing to the public to get the basics right by slowing down, wearing seat belts and ensuring compliance with all road traffic laws.
