A young man was seriously injured and two children aged two and six have been taken to hospital after a two-car crash this morning.

A young man was seriously injured and two children aged two and six have been taken to hospital after a two-car crash this morning.

The crash happened on the R363 Brideswell to Athlone Road, Co Roscommon at around 4am today, about one mile outside Brideswell.

The 23-year-old male driver of one car was alone in the vehicle at the time of the crash. He is being treated at Tullamore Hospital.

The children were travelling in the second car, and are being treated in Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe along with two adults who were also in the car.

The extent of their injuries is unknown at this stage.

The road is expected to remain closed until lunchtime for a forensic collision examination.
