TUI to begin campaign over pay

The Teachers Union of Ireland is to begin a sustained campaign to restore equal pay to new teachers entering the profession.

Changes announced by the government this week mean new entrants will no longer receive qualification allowances worth €4,500 annually.

The starting salary has also been cut to just over €30,000.

The TUI says these changes represent a 22% drop on the earnings of similarly qualified teachers who started just two years ago.

“There is a need for us now to regroup, re-plan and put in place a more sustained campaign,” their president Gerard Craughwell said.

“We have agreed to go back to our branches and put plans in place. When those plans are put in palce we will bring them forward and announce them to the media.

“I would rule nothing out right now.”
