Truck drivers call for road tax cut as they lift Dublin Port blockade

Traffic delays are still affecting the capital this morning after truck drivers blockaded Dublin Port.

Over 100 members of the Irish Road Haulage Association took part in the demonstration, which saw up to 500 lorries held up.

The association says the protest was aimed at drawing attention to the €4,000 road tax payable by every member, which is over six times the rate of their Northern Irish and British competitors.

IRHA President Eoin Gavin says the industry was ignored in the Budget.

Mr Gavin said: "They seemed to mention every industry in the budget - from the horse industry to agriculture. [They are] very important industries for tourism and our exports as well.

"But we support all those industries. We carry the horses out of this country, we carry the cattle out of this country, we carry the butter, we carry the milk. We have put forward strong proposals."
