Trips to Ireland up almost 12% in last quarter

New figures show Ireland's tourism industry enjoyed a boost in the second quarter of the year.

The total number of trips to Ireland jumped 11.8% between May and July, compared to the same time last year.

Visits from North America saw the biggest increase of 15%, while 11.9% more trips were made from Great Britain.

The Central Statistics Office said Irish residents also made more trips abroad in the second quarter - the total was up 9.4% on the 2014 figure.

"Today’s figures indicate that this was the best ever January to July period for overseas visitors to Ireland, with more than 4.8 million arrivals recorded," said Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland.

"Ireland now welcomes 10% of all American visitors to Europe – particularly noteworthy given the intense competition from other destinations."
