A young Irish man, named locally as Govan Jolliffe-Byrne has died in Tanzania.

A young Irish man, named locally as Govan Jolliffe-Byrne has died in Tanzania.

Mr Jolliffe-Byrne was a student in NUI Manooth, he worked as a bartender at Portmarnock Sports and Leisure Club and he played GAA with the local Portmarnock team Naomh Mearnóg.

The GAA club described Mr Jolliffe-Byrne as 'a true legend' on their Twitter page today.

The club also extended their sympathies to the footballer's family and friends.

The 20 year old was from Portmarnock in North Dublin.

He was travelling in Tanzania, and died following a fall outside a nightclub on the East African archipelago of Zanzibar.

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs was unable to confirm details of the incident, but said the Department was providing consular assistance to the family in Portmarnock.
