Tributes flood in for ’wonderful’ school principal, 53, who died after cycling accident

Update 1.18pm: The cyclist who died after a recent road accident has been named as 53-year-old Pádraic Carney – the principal teacher of St. Louis Senior Primary School in Rathmines in Dublin.

It is understood that the deceased lived in Rathfarnham and that the accident happened near their home.

“This is a terrible tragedy for Pádraic’s immediate and extended family, his wide circle of friends and the school community in Rathmines,” said Jake Byrne, chairperson of the school’s board of management.

“We are all deeply saddened by his sudden and untimely death.”

“Pádraic was a wonderful leader in the school. His infectious enthusiasm for the job of teaching children and his warm and charming personality made him most popular with pupils, parents, staff and all who came to know him in his job.”

Psychologists from the National Educational Psychological Service (NEPS) have been supporting and advising the teachers and the school community in their efforts to assist the pupils in dealing with this tragic event.

“We have been in contact with his family who have requested that their need for privacy at this sad and difficult time be respected,” said Mr Byrne.

“Our sympathy and thoughts are with Pádraic’s family and friends.”

Earlier:

A cyclist has died after sustaining serious injuries in a recent road accident in Dublin.

Gardaí at Rathfarnham, Dublin 14 are appealing for witnesses to the collision, which happened on Butterfield Park, Rathfarnham last Monday at around 8.10am.

The collision involved a male cyclist in his 50s and a car. He was taken to Tallaght Hospital where he was pronounced dead last night as a result of injuries sustained in the collision.

Garda Forensic Collision Investigators examined the scene. The local Coroner has been notified.

Investigating Gardaí are appealing for witnesses. Anyone with information is asked to contact Rathfarnham Garda Station 01 666 6500, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
