Trial hears father of three was allegedly stabbed in prison row over TV

A man has gone on trial for the alleged murder of a fellow inmate at Cork prison last year.

Brian Veale, who is originally from Dungarvan in County Waterford, denies stabbing Graham Johnson in the prison’s kitchen area.

On May 16, 2015, Brian Veale and 41-year-old father of three Graham Johnson were inmates of Cork prison and both were working in the kitchen.

Tim O'Leary, who is acting for the Director of Public Prosecutions, told the jurors it will be alleged that a row broke out between them at around 3pm that afternoon.

He said they will hear evidence that it arose over the switching between a racing channel and SKY Sports News on the kitchen’s TV.

Mr Veale is accused of stabbing his fellow inmate with a large kitchen knife two hours later.

Eye witnesses will give evidence of seeing Mr Johnson falling onto the ground very quickly and of the accused being relatively calm afterwards.

The court heard a bloodied knife was found in the kitchen and that blood samples taken from Mr Veale’s clothes matched his alleged victim’s DNA.

The trial is due to finish sometime next week.
