Trial date set for death of Irish woman at abortion clinic in London

Three medics will go on trial in London next March over the manslaughter of an African woman who'd been living in Ireland.

Aisha Chithira died after attending a Marie Stopes Clinic for an abortion in January of 2012.

Doctor Adedayo Adedji and nurses Gemma Pullen and Margaret Miller appeared before the Central Criminal Court in London today charged with having unlawfully killing the 32-year-old by manslaughter through gross negligence.

A trial date was set for March 7th 2016.

Irish Times London Editor Mark Hennessy explains what happened Ms Chithira: "At the time Ms Chithira became unwell after the abortion took place. It is understood it was a mid to late afternoon termination.

"She was discharged by the clinic and she then took a taxi to a friend’s house but she became seriously unwell in the taxi as she was being driven there.

"She suffered internal bleeding and she appeared to have also suffered a cardiac arrest.

"An ambulance was called but they failed to revive her at that time."
