Traffic chaos as two accidents occur on busy Cork road

Two accidents occurred within 15 minutes of each other on the busy South Ring Road in Cork today.

Emergency services attended the scene of one car upturned in a ditch, whilst a hearse and a convertible were involved in another accident.

The incidents happened within 300 metres of each other.

Gardaí received their first call at 8.28am. The second incident was reported 15 minutes later. Gardaí were unable to confirm which of the crashes occurred first.

There were no significant injuries, gardaí said.

The accidents caused significant delays, with traffic reduced to one lane on the N40, resulting in delays on the Rochestown Road itself and also the Douglas Road during rush-hour morning traffic.

There were also delays also on approach to the South Ring Road from Carr's Hill.

It was feared the southbound bore of the Jack Lynch Tunnel would have to be closed for a time, but that did not prove necessary.
